To reestablish contact with the realities of the soul, to reopen the source from which Being eternally resurges: such is the occult and unspeakable ideal from which Hubert Aquin’s poetics proceeds. From his youth onwards, Aquin secretly seeks to unravel the mesh of consciousness, in order to retrace the path leading back towards the dark nether regions of the Self, towards the Pleroma of the naked life. Thus he operates exclusively in the service of the impersonal intentionality inscribed in the depths of his psyche, as the instrument of the blind will that acts inside of him “like an inertial force”. His work does not fulfill itself in the text, but rather runs counter to the text, even counter to language itself; it deploys as an exhilarating confrontation with the Negative, with the sacred Word issuing from the abyss. In other words, Aquin’s work takes the form of a Gnosis: an exercise in de-subjectivization and self-destruction that consists in attaining participative knowledge of the imaginal seal imprinted behind the bars of finitude. This thesis, principally devoted to an analysis of the gnostic dimension of Hubert Aquin’s œuvre, aims to show that to decipher the mysterious hieroglyph engraved in the depths of the soul is no simple task: it is rather an opus contra naturam, involving great dangers (of which the first is the risk of psychic inflation); yet, to the author’s eyes, only this task is really necessary and truly worthy of being undertaken, for only by this means can the human being escape from engulfment in death – by being reborn. As Aquin writes in an early work, to open oneself unconditionally to the Negative (i.e., self-destruction) is “a special way of experiencing life and a prerequisite to any artistic enterprise”; it is equivalent to “a superior mode of knowledge” of an “impersonal” kind, promising immediate salvation

One of the most significant experiences of SISS on the motor –training plan, which allowed in some cases the implementation of activity of research-action, was the motor- sports laboratory. The activity of laboratory in the motor- sports field and the motor subjects, along with specific training, represents in the SSIS (Specialization School Teaching Secondary) area an innovative element. This also gave a strong contribute to the definition of a new professional profile of the teacher that has in it those transversal skills needed to promote a new teaching, finding the necessary balances between the cognitive moment and the applicative and operative one

    Get PDF
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors, but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and what remains to be addressed in the future

Human activity recognition using multisensor data fusion based on Reservoir Computing

Activity recognition plays a key role in providing activity assistance and care for users in smart homes. In this work, we present an activity recognition system that classifies in the near real-time a set of common daily activities exploiting both the data sampled by sensors embedded in a smartphone carried out by the user and the reciprocal Received Signal Strength (RSS) values coming from worn wireless sensor devices and from sensors deployed in the environment. In order to achieve an effective and responsive classification, a decision tree based on multisensor data-stream is applied fusing data coming from embedded sensors on the smartphone and environmental sensors before processing the RSS stream. To this end, we model the RSS stream, obtained from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) implemented as efficient Echo State Networks (ESNs), within the Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm. We targeted the system for the EvAAL scenario, an international competition that aims at establishing benchmarks and evaluation metrics for comparing Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions. In this paper, the performance of the proposed activity recognition system is assessed on a purposely collected real-world dataset, taking also into account a competitive neural network approach for performance comparison. Our results show that, with an appropriate configuration of the information fusion chain, the proposed system reaches a very good accuracy with a low deployment cost

Implementing virtual pheromones in BDI robots using MQTT and Jason

Robotic coordination is a crucial issue in the development of many applications in swarm robotics, ranging from mapping unknown and potentially dangerous areas to the synthesis of plans to achieve complex tasks such as moving goods between locations under resource constraints. In this context, stigmergy is a widely employed approach to robotic coordination based on the idea of interacting with the environment by means of markers called pheromones. Pheromones do not need to be "physical marks", and a number of works have investigated the use of digital, virtual pheromones. In this paper, we show how the concept of virtual pheromones can be implemented in Jason, a Java-based interpreter for an extended version of AgentSpeak, providing a high-level modelling and execution environment for multi-agent systems. We also exploit MQTT, a messaging infrastructure for the Internet-of-Things. This allows the implementation of stigmergic algorithms in a high-level declarative language, building on top of low-level infrastructures typically used only for controlling sensors and actuators

Monitoring elderly behavior via indoor position-based stigmergy

In this paper we present a novel approach for monitoring elderly people living alone and independently in their own homes. The proposed system is able to detect behavioral deviations of the routine indoor activities on the basis of a generic indoor localization system and a swarm intelligence method. For this reason, an in-depth study on the error modeling of state-of-the-art indoor localization systems is presented in order to test the proposed system under different conditions in terms of localization error. More specifically, spatiotemporal tracks provided by the indoor localization system are augmented, via marker-based stigmergy, in order to enable their self-organization. This allows a marking structure appearing and staying spontaneously at runtime, when some local dynamism occurs. At a second level of processing, similarity evaluation is performed between stigmergic marks over different time periods in order to assess deviations. The purpose of this approach is to overcome an explicit modeling of user's activities and behaviors that is very inefficient to be managed, as it works only if the user does not stray too far from the conditions under which these explicit representations were formulated. The effectiveness of the proposed system has been experimented on real-world scenarios. The paper includes the problem statement and its characterization in the literature, as well as the proposed solving approach and experimental settings

The Meaning of Sleep Quality: A Survey of Available Technologies

    Get PDF
Sleep is an important part of the human daily routine. Restoring sleep is strongly related to a better physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being. By contrast, poor or disordered sleep leads to possible impairments of cognitive and psychological functioning and to a worsened general physical health. In this context, understanding changes in sleep quality becomes a research imperative that leads to the need for the definition of what restoring or quality sleep means. This understanding of what "sleep quality" means requires a cross-domain investigation. It arises the need for a comprehensive study that offers a complete taxonomy of sleep monitoring systems, with a focus on sleep quality, and that gives useful insights about which combination of metrics, signals, and sleep variables is the best in relation to different categories of users. The proposed study is focused on systematically categorizing the methods and approaches for sleep quality understanding, with an emphasis on technological approaches, including wearable, on-bed, and actigraphy devices. It offers a systematic review for researchers who are interested in sleep quality identification tasks, and highlights strengths and weaknesses of state-of-the-art metrics and solutions in order to suggest the best choice for new potential research challenges in the field. Another important outcome of the proposed work is the study of the impact on the identified signal metrics and solutions of the different target user populations with their specific user requirements
